In a celebration of what would’ve been Andy Kaufman’s 64th birthday, here’s a fitting tribute showing one of his most daring routines, being heckled by his co-writer, Bob Zmuda at the 10th anniversary of the Catch a Rising Star nightclub in 1983.
“So often women can’t wrestle control away from the loud, obnoxious guys, and Amy never had an issue with that.
She controls the scene, and never takes the backseat or plays a typical sort of role as women do to themselves sometimes, to choose to play the girlfriend or something like that. She’s completely as dominant as anybody onstage.
She knew what these characters would do in any situation; she just owned them. It’s a great asset in comedy to have a really strong woman.” - Ian Roberts
It’s from October 15, 1988, Season 14 Episode 2, hosted by Matthew Broderick with musical guests, The Sugarcubes. The notorious sketch featured Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller, Jon Lovitz, Victoria Jackson, and Nora Dunn as members of some sort of nude beach club and host Broderick as a newcomer friend of Carvey’s. Broderick is self-conscious of his penis size, but is reassured by the members of the club and they all eventually break out into “The Penis Song.” I read the transcript here and it sounds like it was really funny. Mainly though, I just want to see it because I know it was banned from ever airing again. However, on the internet I have discovered a lot of other sketches and performances that have been banned from ever airing again, so I’m just wondering if maybe this one’s out there somewhere, too.
